Day 9 - June 30, 1996

Today's journal is written by Carla Montgomery:

Today we got to the Grand Canyon, one of my most favorite places! We got a little lecture from Steig this morning because people were late returning from a hike, and people were leaving garbage around the campsite, which I understand. It wasn't going to be a very long drive which is nice because with the warm weather being on the bus more than 3 hours is pretty uncomfortable. The drive was so short and my sleeping made it even better. We came into camp and seeing the Grand Canyon again was just awesome. Upon seeing it all you can say is "WOW!" The canyon hike is tomorrow but I don't think I'll do it; not all of it anyway. I figure with the toe I broke a week and a half ago, and just getting over a cold, it wouldn't be the most intelligent thing to do, although I wouldn't mind. We ate our lunch of tuna fish, chips, and pickles, and then I felt really sick. So sick, in fact, that during Steig's talk about the hike I had to go into the bathroom where I blacked out and fell over. Then I felt pretty stupid. After that I needed a nap. I felt a little better after waking up and went to the store to get something to eat and drink. The entire group was going to have a pasta party to load up on carbs for the hike tomorrow. I wasn't hungry so I didn't eat. I took a shower. It felt so good to get the dirt and sand off my body. I went with Mike M. and Matt to the cafeteria where Matt bought us some of the best ice cream I've ever had. We came back at about 9:30 and I went to bed soon after.

Note: Journal entries and snapshots will be updated one day after they occur.

Snapshots From Day 9

Sorry, due to our busy schedule, we were unable to capture any photographs of our stay in the Grand Canyon. Many students hiked the canyon and took pictures from the overlook areas, which they can share with you when they return home.
